A Systematic Literature Review of Scales to Assess SMEs Resilience toClimate Change

Abstract

Amidst escalating climate change, it is crucial for organizations, particularly Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), to be able to endure adversities to stay competitive and ensure their long-term survival. This literature review examines the scales and metrics used to evaluate the resilience of SMEs to climate change. In our study, we included several papers published in top quality journals and focused on five research themes: 1) diversity of scales and metrics, 2) capacity to measure various resilience aspects (physical, financial, operational, strategic), 3) strengths and limitations of scales, 4) application of scales across industries and geographic locations, and 5) derived best practices. The results of our literature review suggest that prior studies have used a diverse range of assessment tools, emphasizing the necessity for comprehensive, multidimensional measurements that encompass the entire range of resilience. Also, the study consolidates existing methodologies, highlights significant deficiencies in the literature and contributes to the current discussion on sustainable business practices by examining methods to quantify corporate resilience. It also lays the groundwork for future empirical research and the creation of resilient strategies in SMEs.
