A Solid Foundation for Producing Productive Teachers for National Development

Abstract

The clamour for curriculum review in Nigerian tertiary institutions, the colleges of education in particular, in the wake of the rude awakenings of the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, and the recent upgrade of the colleges of education to dual mode operation; are direct drives for transformation and rebirth in the production of quality teachers for national development. Quality teacher education via the Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) programme, plays a fundamental role in shaping the educational terrain of any nation, thereby acting as a foundation for national development. In the context of Nigeria, the quality of teacher education programme directly affects the country's socio-economic growth, technological advancement, and overall progress. This paper examines the current state of teacher education in Nigeria, highlighting its challenges, strengths, and the pivotal role it plays in the country's development. It delves into the importance of refining teacher training programmes, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach that integrates modern pedagogies, technology, and a focus on cultivating teachers' professional competencies.
