Abstract

The clamour for curriculum review in Nigerian tertiary institutions, the colleges of education in particular, in the wake of the rude awakenings of the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, and the recent upgrade of the colleges of education to dual mode operation; are direct drives for transformation and rebirth in the production of quality teachers for national development. Quality teacher education via the Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) programme, plays a fundamental role in shaping the educational terrain of any nation, thereby acting as a foundation for national development. In the context of Nigeria, the quality of teacher education programme directly affects the country's socio-economic growth, technological advancement, and overall progress. This paper examines the current state of teacher education in Nigeria, highlighting its challenges, strengths, and the pivotal role it plays in the country's development. It delves into the importance of refining teacher training programmes, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach that integrates modern pedagogies, technology, and a focus on cultivating teachers' professional competencies. Furthermore, it discusses the implications of policies and reforms aimed at enhancing the quality of teacher education to meet the evolving demands of Nigeria's educational system and contribute meaningfully to the nation's development agenda. The paper aims at underscoring the imperative role that effective teacher education plays in steering Nigeria towards a brighter future, offering insights into strategies and approaches essential for its continual improvement.
