With the success of the Tobacco Control Data Initiative (TCDI), stakeholders overwhelmingly highlighted that though data on adults existed, recent nationally-representative data on adolescents was unavailable. In response, Development Gateway: An IREX Venture (DG) launched the first-ever nationally-representative household surveys on tobacco and nicotine product use among 10-17 year-olds in the DRC, Kenya, and Nigeria in March-June 2024.
Dr. Noreen Mdege, Research Lead at DG and Associate Professor in Global Public Health at the University of York, will present the findings from this survey, including data on the use of various tobacco and nicotine products and the prevalence estimated for their use. She will also present data on the factors associated with use, and the opportunities and challenges that were realized during study implementation, including addressing some assumptions about the feasibility and acceptability of collecting data on tobacco use from this age group at home. The presentation showcases a model for adolescent-focused tobacco control policy, practice and research in Africa.
