A Multi-Sectoral Approach to Youth Involvement in Research On Adolescents in Nigeria

Abstract

Building on the success of DG’s partnership with the Tobacco Control Unit in Nigeria, when Development Gateway: An IREX Venture (DG) began the co-design process for the adolescent survey, we understood the need to actively involve youth in the design, implementation, and dissemination of the data. As a result, in 2024, DG in collaboration with the Ministry of Health launched the first-ever Youth Advisory Group in Nigeria.
Mr. Maikudi, DG’s Nigeria Country Lead, will speak about his experience supporting the creation of the Youth Advisory Group, whose membership includes government entities such as the Ministry of Youth, student groups such as the University of Abuja Smoke-Free Club, and faith-based youth organizations. He will present on the challenges faced in forming the group as well as the successes and lessons learned in engaging the youth.
