Abstract

This presentation examines the quantitative impact of a targeted intervention designed to combat chronic absenteeism among students residing in NYC shelters. Using attendance data from 2017-2024, we analyzed trends, identified barriers, and assessed the effectiveness of our interventions through survival analysis and comparative metrics. Key findings include a 31% increase in students maintaining a 90% attendance rate compared to pre-intervention cohorts, with notable improvements among K-5 and high school students. Our data reveal that timely interventions—such as personalized attendance plans, direct engagement with school liaisons, and enhanced case management—correlate with sustained attendance gains. By leveraging real-time attendance tracking and demographic analysis, we demonstrate how evidence-based strategies can drive systemic improvements in student engagement. This session will provide a deep dive into our data analysis methods, discuss the challenges of working with fragmented reporting systems, and explore the implications for policy and practice in addressing chronic absenteeism.
