The Youth Mandate: Examining the Rise of Climate Activism as a Catalyst for Global Policy Reform

Abstract

The escalating climate crisis has positioned the younger generation as primary drivers of contemporary political change. This paper examines the "Youth Mandate"—the phenomenon where youth-led movements, such as Fridays for Future, exert pressure on international policy. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the study analyses legislative shifts in G20 nations following major youth mobilizations between 2018 and 2025. Preliminary findings indicate a correlation between localized youth protests and the adoption of aggressive carbon-neutrality targets. The paper concludes by arguing for the institutionalization of youth participation within core policy-making processes.
