Measurement of Professional Competencies in the Basic Education Program at the University of Otavalo, Ecuador

Abstract

This study examined the professional competencies of undergraduate students pursuing a Basic Education degree at the University of Otavalo. The research question focused on whether students possessed competencies aligned with their academic level. The objective of the research was to measure the level of achievement of the students' professional competencies, according to their level of studies. The units of analysis were the generic competencies and the specific competencies corresponding to the profession, as defined in the academic curriculum. A quantitative approach was employed, using a questionnaire adapted for each academic year. The questionnaire was validated by a panel of experts and was administered through the MOODLE platform. The sample included 42 students from different levels of the program. Results indicated that students achieved a high level of both generic and specific competencies, with 97% and 94% proficiency, respectively. These findings support the effectiveness of the competency-based teaching methodology employed by the faculty. The study concludes that this approach successfully contributes to the development of the desired graduate profile.
