Edu-Culture Feminist Aesthetic in Ogochukwu’s in The Middle of The Night

Abstract

In her novel, In the Middle of The Night (sic), Ogochukwu Promise makes an impressive incursion into virtually every facet of Nigerian society, addressing themes that reflect her concern and consciousness of issues relating to corruption, bad governance, insurgency, women’s marginalisation, and other related matters. Beyond these, the novel also affirms that national strength lies in the reconciliation and cooperation of both sexes towards building a conducive and better nation. The research methodology used for this study is qualitative, and a sociological approach is adopted in the analysis of the novel, using this researcher’s Edu-culture feminist model, a variant of African feminist theories, which recognises the inclusion of socio-political and economic issues in the works of contemporary Nigerian female writers, and also encourages love, respect, tolerance, high education, dialogue, conciliation, and group consciousness, which the Nigerian culture embraces. This paper concludes and recommends the adequate and balanced complementary roles of both genders in government administration, and the combination of high education and good moral values advocated by Nigerian culture, to be inculcated by Nigerian leaders in particular and African leaders in general to achieve a peaceful and new Nigeria.
