Abstract

This paper reviews exemplary university-driven sustainability initiatives worldwide and highlights the common traits of successful practice. Drawing on bibliometric data and a systematic review of research published between 2004 and 2023, it maps publication trends, citation patterns, disciplinary links, and international collaborations using Dimensions and VOSviewer. Reference is also made to the Top 20 institutions in the World University Sustainability Ranking. Findings show a steady rise in academic attention, with major contributions from the United States, Spain, Japan, and the United Kingdom. Effective approaches typically feature community engagement, interdisciplinary teamwork, stakeholder participation, forward-looking strategies, technological innovation, resource efficiency, and flexibility. The study notes that many comparable projects may exist beyond the documented record and urges higher-education institutions to adopt a “university without borders” ethos by partnering with local communities and organizations pursuing the Sustainable Development Goals to strengthen cross-institutional learning.
